4 Nigerian Law Books Reviewed: Land Law, Property Practice, Fintech and Trial Advocacy

If you practise property law, advise fintech clients or spend your days in trial work, these four Nigerian titles cover those areas: Principles of Land Law in Nigeria, Fundamentals of Property Law Practice in Nigeria, Fintech Law and Practice in Nigeria, and Practice Notes for Trial Lawyers (4th Edition). Here is what each one covers and who it suits.

Most “best law books” lists rank general textbooks. These four are narrower, aimed at specific practice areas, so each review below tells you who should buy it.

1. Principles of Land Law in Nigeria, by Fred F. Odibei, Esq.

Best for: law students and lawyers who need a grounding in how land is held and dealt with under Nigerian law.

As the title says, the book covers the principles of land law in a Nigerian setting. That matters because land rights and transactions here follow local statutes and case law, not general common-law texts alone.

2. Fundamentals of Property Law Practice in Nigeria, by Emmanuel Oluwafemi Olowononi, Esq. and Uche Obasi, Esq.

Best for: lawyers who handle property transactions and want a practice-focused text.

The word “Practice” in the title points to the working side of property law, such as how transactions are handled, and not only the theory. It’s a hardcover with two named authors.

How it differs from book 1: the Odibei book is about principles. This one is about practice. Many property lawyers keep both.

3. Fintech Law and Practice in Nigeria, by Davidson Oturu, LL.M, MBA

Best for: lawyers advising payment companies, startups and financial-services clients, and anyone moving into technology and finance work.

Fintech is one of the fastest-growing areas of practice, and a Nigeria-specific title helps because the regulation here differs from other markets. The cover signals its range with icons for cards, digital currency, banking and investment.

4. Practice Notes for Trial Lawyers (4th Edition), by Fred F. Odibei, Esq.

Best for: litigators who need quick authorities when preparing for court or writing briefs.

The cover describes it as a compendium of legal principles and authorities for general research and brief writing. In practice, that makes it a reference to keep within reach when drafting. This is the fourth edition, so ask the seller to confirm it is the latest before you buy.
