Surviving Nigerian Law School: What First-Years Wish They Knew
Nigerian Law School is a one-year practical programme, and most people who struggle with it either fall behind on attendance, treat the externship casually, or start serious study too late. Show up to everything, learn the practical formats from the start, take the externship and its portfolio seriously, begin past questions early, and look after your money and health.
Law School feels different from university. It teaches you to practise, not just to know the law. Here are eight things worth knowing before you resume.
What the Year Looks Like
The programme is a one-year professional training run by the Council of Legal Education. The 2025/2026 session ran across seven campuses in Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Kano, Yola, Yenagoa and Port Harcourt, over three terms. The year includes lectures, an externship and a Bar Final examination. Calendars change from session to session, so always follow the current one from the Law School. scribdthenigerialawyer
1. Treat Attendance as Compulsory
Attendance at the Nigerian Law School for Bar vocational training is mandatory. Missing lectures and externship days can cause problems later, so plan around the calendar and don’t treat it as optional. acu
2. Learn the Practical Skills From Week One
The Bar Final is practice-based. It tests five core practice modules plus a multiple-choice paper. That means drafting, procedure and applying the law to facts, not reciting definitions. In each module, learn the formats and steps first: how a pleading is structured, what comes after filing, how a conveyance is completed. Our guide to [a Bar Final study timeline] [link to /bar-exam-prep-study-timeline/] shows how to plan the final stretch. awajis
3. Take the Externship and Portfolio Seriously
The externship is where classroom learning meets real work. In the 2025/2026 calendar, a court externship was followed by a chambers externship, each of about five weeks, with portfolio assessment afterwards. The stakes are real: the Law School’s Director-General has said that students who fail the portfolio assessment may be allowed to sit the Bar Final, but their results are withheld until they repeat the required component. thenigerialawyerthenigerialawyer
To protect yourself:
- Keep a daily log of what you did and learned.
- Ask for real tasks, and do small ones well.
- Get your supervisors to sign and confirm your records as required.
- Be punctual and dress properly.
If you’re still at university, an earlier internship helps you arrive ready. See [how to get a law firm internship] [link to /law-firm-internship-nigeria/].
4. Start Past Questions Early
Don’t leave practice for the last month. After each topic, try a past question under timed conditions. You learn the pattern of how topics are tested, and you find your weak points while there’s still time to fix them.
5. Build a Small, Reliable Study Group
Two to four serious people beat a crowd. Use the group to quiz each other on procedure and to swap notes on difficult topics. If it turns into a gist session, find another group.
6. Know the Dress Code and Presentation Expectations
Law School has a dress code. It includes a white shirt with black trousers or skirt. Check the current rules for your campus, keep your outfits clean and ready, and plan for the externship, where you’ll dress for court and chambers. Later on you’ll need your call-to-bar outfit, so read our guides on [choosing legal attire for Call to Bar] [link to /how-to-choose-the-right-legal-attire-for-your-call-to-bar-ceremony/] and [measuring for a wig and gown] [link to /lawyer-wig-and-gown-size-guide/] before you order. awajis
7. Sort Out Money and Accommodation Early
Fees, rent, transport, printing, books and externship costs add up. Make a simple budget at the start, and keep a small reserve. Accommodation can be tight: the Law School’s Director-General has asked the NBA to help provide hostels across campuses. If you need housing near your campus, start looking as soon as your posting is confirmed. thenigerialawyer
8. Look After Yourself
A heavy schedule is not a reason to skip meals, sleep or exercise. Set a bedtime, keep your meals regular and take short breaks. If you feel overwhelmed, talk to a friend, a family member or someone you trust. Students who stay well usually study better.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping lectures and relying on notes from friends.
- Treating the externship as a holiday and ignoring the portfolio.
- Leaving past questions until the last month.
- Studying alone for the whole year.
- Spending everything early and running short before the Bar Final.
